New Zealand > Drugs

Drugs are illegal, yet marijuana is popular, "P" has become a major problem, and most recreational drugs and herbal highs are widely available. Visitors carrying into NZ are regularly caught as the visitor welcome on arrival involves customs and biosecurity formalities.

Cannabis
The most popular high and in comparison to other drugs, one with the only confirmed side effects being the affect of smoke in the lungs being similar to that of tobacco. It's use is widespread with an estimated 70% of the adult population having tried it and some 30% being occasional or regular users.

Herbal Highs
Are legal, though legality is being disputed due to deaths caused by overdoses. Anyone taking more than advised or mixing should write suicide note before doing so. Every person who dies of overdose or misadventure supports the campaigners wanting to make happy pills illegal.

Laws
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, it is a criminal offence to use, cultivate or supply cannabis. They are more lenient on personal use, but will give a heavy fine or jail for supply/cultivation. Possession of more than 28 grams of cannabis will lead to a charge of possession with the purpose to supply or sell.

The laws regarding drug use are reasonably strict, and it is not a good idea to use any drugs or get out of it in a public place. The law targets dealers, and manufacturers, but bust anyone caught and the consequences vary, depending on the circumstance, evidence and of your history.

Drug Paraphernalia
Persons with bongs, pipes, spotting equipment or syringes can get busted.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act (1975) controlled drugs are classified Class A, Class B and Class C. Class A drugs are considered the most serious, and Class C the least serious.

Class A drugs include heroin (including some homebake), cocaine, LSD, mescaline, peyote, psilocybine and magic mushrooms.
Class B drugs include opium, methadone, morphine, homebake, amphetamine, hash oil and ecstasy.
Class C drugs include cannabis and some prescribed drugs such as codeine.

If you are found to have in your possession large quantities of drugs, you may be charged with possession for the purpose of supply or sale.

Sentences:
# Class A: Life imprisonment
# Class B: Max 14 years
# Class C: Max 8 years
# Also profits from dealing in drugs may be confiscated, and this may involve seizure of homes and properties.
